Masks for Seniors Serving Organizations
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Currently out of masks
The Edmonton Seniors Coordinating Council was provided with 100,000 masks in 2020 by the Alberta Government to distribute to Edmonton seniors serving organizations. ESCC is currently out of masks, HOWEVER, we encourage interested organizations to complete our online order form anyway. An ESCC staff member will connect with you in the event we receive more masks.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: COVID-19 Vaccine Program
Alberta has moved to Phase 2B of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, which opens eligibility to those age 16 to 64 with certain underlying health conditions. Also, Albertans age 55 to 64 without underlying health conditions can now receive the AstraZeneca vaccine. Booking continues for any Albertan age 65+ as part of Phases 1 and 2A.

As more supply of the COVID-19 vaccine arrives, more pharmacies will be able to offer vaccinations.
Those who do not have the means to get to their vaccine appointment by getting a ride from a family member, friend, taxi, or an alternate transportation source should dial 211 for help connecting with local community transportation supports.
Community organizations able to provide vaccine transportation supports are asked to contact 211 Alberta (780-392-8722 or database@ab.211.ca).

Transportation Available for Seniors Seeking COVID-19 Vaccine
Local assisted transportation provider, Drive Happiness, is currently offering door-through-door transportation for seniors seeking a COVID-19 vaccine. This program is ideal for lower income seniors with mobility challenges or limited access transportation. For more information, contact Drive Happiness at 780-424-5438 or info@drivehappiness.ca.

- Alberta Health advises: If you have COVID-19 symptoms and have travelled outside Canada or were exposed to someone who has COVID-19, stay home and call Health Link at 811 for instructions. Do not go to a health care facility without consulting Health Link at 811 first. If you need immediate medical attention, call 911 and inform them that you may have COVID-19.

Prime Minister Announces Additional Support for Canadian Seniors
On May 12, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a series of additional measures to help Canadian seniors and provide them with greater financial security in this time of crisis. These measures include financial assistance, income reporting postponement, and funds for community-based initiatives to reduce social isolation.

Fall 2020 Report Includes Additional Considerations for Older Canadians
Government of Canada
In a recent economic statement issued Fall 2020, the Government of Canada has announced additional supports for Canadian seniors. Highlights include:
- A new $1B Safe Long-term Care Fund to protect seniors living in long-term care
- Supports for training up to 4,000 personal support workers to address for labour shortages in personal care (both long-term care and home care)
- Support for personal support workers, home care workers and essential workers involved in senior care
- Funding for research to better understand practices that protect seniors in long-term care
- New funding for the Canadian Red Cross to protect seniors and vulnerable populations
- Funding to expand the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement’s LTC+ initiative, which helps address gaps in long-term care and seniors' residences

- Dr. Bing Li from the Edmonton Chinatown Care Centre has created an informative series of COVID-19 videos in Cantonese.

- Your family doctor is still the best point of contact for healthcare needs. If you don't have a family doctor, get connected at AlbertaFindADoctor.ca.

- WellCan offers free resources to help Canadians develop coping strategies to stay healthy during COVID-19.

- This bulletin released by the Government of Canada details scams that have arisen from the COVID-19 pandemic.
- This one-pager developed by Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario and CanAge provides the top 10 COVID-19 frauds and scams currently being used to prey on vulnerable seniors
How to report price gouging
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been increasing reports of price gouging. You can protect yourself by reporting offending businesses to the Service Alberta - Report a Rip off tip line by phoning 1-877-427-4088.

Closures, Service Limitations, & Current Programming Options

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted many decisions to curtail or cancel programs and events in the Edmonton area and senior-serving organizations are no exception. Right now, Edmonton seniors serving organizations are endeavoring to offer a wide selection of online programming during the pandemic. Select centres have resumed in-person programming, following AHS guidelines including social distancing, enhanced sanitation, smaller class sizes, and the mandated use of masks.
Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories
The Seeds of Hope education series and First Link Connection information sessions are cancelled until further notice. Care Partner Support Groups have been moved to a teleconference format so that care partners can stay in contact. Staff are all still working making calls and checking in with clients.

The Ashbourne
The Ashbourne, an Independent and Assisted Living Residence, maintains a safe living environment by following all required and recommended directives from Alberta Health Services and the province's Chief Medical Officer. There is 24-hour care staff in the building. The Ashbourne is currently accepting new residents. New residents will be required to quarantine in their suite for fourteen days after move-in as a safety precaution. For more information, call 780 430-5800 or visit www.theashbourne.ca.

Canterbury Foundation
Canterbury is restricting visitors to only essential visitations at this time. Essential visitors must be pre-screened by a Canterbury representative before entering the facility. Essential visitors include:
- Palliative vigil: visitors with a close loved-one in palliative care.
- For residents who need critical support: in these cases, caregivers will be contacted directly by Canterbury ahead of visiting.
Central Lions Seniors Association (CLSA)
CLSA will not go forward with winter programming and will remain closed for the foreseeable future. The centre is hopeful that with the pending vaccine, we will be in a safer and healthier position to offer classes for the spring session, which is scheduled to start on April 19.

Drive Happiness
Drive Happiness provides seniors assisted transportation using volunteer drivers. Registered riders are able to book rides to medical appointments, for groceries, errands and social activities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we encourage riders to remain home as much as possible.Our volunteers started and have continued to purchase groceries on behalf of our riders. We have implemented a ‘Friendly Callers’ program that connects volunteers with socially isolated seniors in a weekly phone-call. Our volunteer drivers have been equipped with masks and a car care kit to clean surfaces between each ride. Riders have to wear masks unless medically unable to do so and if they do not have one, we will provide them with one. We continue to monitor and change our services as needed. Staff can be reached by phone during regular business hours, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Early Onset Dementia Alberta Foundation (EODAF)
The International Dementia Building Awareness Conference scheduled for October 30 and 31 at The DoubleTree by Hilton in Edmonton, Alberta has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

Edmonton Lifelong Learners Association (ELLA)
ELLA has recently launched a new, user friendly website, my-ella.com. Winter Session registration commences December 8, 2020 for 33 Zoom courses in humanities, science, wellness and leisure, fine arts and art instruction. Courses are available for the period of January - April 2021. An annual ELLA membership ($25) is required to register. Included with your ELLA membership is access to ELLA's free Friday Noon Hour Presentation series.

ElderCare Edmonton
ElderCare Edmonton is temporarily suspending in-person programming out of an abundance of care and caution for our clients and staff. ElderCare has every confidence in the work being done by Alberta Health Services to address COVID-19 cases, and will continue to work closely with AHS in sharing information and abiding by all COVID-19 safety criteria, including PPE, infectious disease prevention protocol, and an enhanced cleaning regime. As the situation related to COVID-19 cases in Edmonton continues to evolve ElderCare will reevaluate its ability to provide in-person programming. In the meantime, ElderCare is continuing to provide wellness calls, activity booklets and our weekly “Well Connected” online programming.

Edmonton Meals on Wheels
Edmonton Meals on Wheels is the core community food service provider for Edmontonians. Service is not restricted--any person in need of nutritious, locally produced, affordable, home cooked meals delivered safely to your door may enroll in this service. Food services include fresh daily and frozen meal programs and two grocery shopping and delivery programs. Edmonton Meals on Wheels is closely following the advice of health authorities, expanding facility sanitation, ensuring physical distancing, and wearing facial coverings. Client wellbeing checks and social contact continues with regular telephone calls from staff and volunteers. Edmonton Meals on Wheels' resourceful and responsive staff have expanded programming to ensure the food security needs of the community are met. Edmonton Seniors Centre
ESC stopped in-person programming in March, however, the centre is using Zoom to offer online fitness classes, peer support groups, crafting sessions, technology help, health and wellness advice, and arts classes. See their website for details. For seniors seeking programs on their own time, ESC has started up a new initiative called “ESCTV”. With no software to download and no fees to pay, ESCTV is an innovative streaming service offering local content curated for Edmonton’s 55+ community. Watch here.

Good Samaritan TeleCare® Service
TeleCare® has upgraded it’s Home Based Personal Emergency Response equipment and added a new device – SECUREGO, which is an all-in-one cellular, GPS and automatic fall detection device to better serve seniors. The home-based system – SECUREHOME provides the option a standard Help Button or Fall Detect pendant. This new system is designed to be user-friendly with straightforward, simplified installation and use, compared to the prevision version. The SECUREGO is as simple as using a mobile phone and comes fully programmed for plug-and-play and immediate use after charging and simple setup procedure. Due to the pandemic, technicians are unable to provide in-person installation, but they are available via phone to walk seniors through the straightforward installation and setup process. Equipment will be delivered to the door-step or shipped by post if outside Edmonton, while ensuring contactless delivery and extra precautions such as hand sanitization, wearing gloves and mask are observed for the safety of seniors.

Jewish Family Services Edmonton
Although group courses and events have been postponed until further notice JFSE has added online and phone delivery for programs and services and implemented protocols to ensure safety and minimal exposure for continuing in-person services.
- Counselling: Therapists will continue to offer in-office counselling sessions, implementing intake protocols to address personal safety. To increase accessibility to counselling amid the stress of this pandemic, we have extended service options to phone and/or online counselling sessions.
- Community Links continues to operate via phone or online connections. English classes will transition to virtual formats.
- Home Support Services are continuing to operate including Holocaust Survivor Supports and SMART (Seniors Making Age-Related Transitions). Home Support Workers continue to serve seniors at home providing care, food security and transportation.
- For seniors seeking mental health support, the centre is offering a new course, "Staying Well & Thriving during Uncertain Times: Finding Opportunities for Positive Change".

Mill Woods Seniors Association (MWSA)
IMPORTANT UPDATE: MWSA has currently suspended in-person programming and will resume when restrictions lift. Following the enhanced COVID-19 measures announced on Nov. 24 by the Alberta Government, MWSA has decided to suspend in-person programming for the time being. While you can't visit in-person, the centre is offering a great selection of online programming. The 2nd Floor Cafe remains closed for dine-in service, however, meals-to-go and fresh cinnamon buns are available for pick-up. Visit the MWSA web page for more information.

Multicultural Health Brokers Co-operative (MCHB)
In-person groups and events for seniors are currently paused, however, Health Brokers doing senior outreach are providing one-on-one support and facilitating groups by phone, What’s App, FaceTime and Zoom. Whenever necessary, we are doing limited one-on-one outreach to seniors in critical need of support.

North Edmonton Seniors Association (NESA)

North West Edmonton Seniors Society (NWESS)
- The centre remains closed for the time being while board and staff work on reopening strategies and procedures.
- Seniors seeking help around the house can continue to access the Seniors Home Supports program at 780-482-1958.

- Seniors seeking books, puzzles or crafting supplies can contact the office and book a time to come in.

Pride Centre of Edmonton
The building is closed. We are not offering drop-in sessions but we are expanding Aging with Pride support group programming at Seniors’ Centre Without Walls to weekly sessions. We are providing services online or via phone. Education and training continues via Zoom.

St. Michael’s Health Group
St. Michael’s Long Term Care Centre and Millennium Pavilion Seniors Lodge are both closed and the Day Support program for seniors living in the community have been suspended.

Sage Seniors Association
Although the Sage building remains closed, the organization is continuing to provide essential services and proactively support seniors during the pandemic. In response to heath guidelines, the following operational changes have been made.

SCONA Senior’s Center
- All outreach will be performed over the phone until further notice, except in the case of emergency situations that may require face-to-face intervention. Strict safety protocol will be followed.
- Telephone buddy system using SCONA Peer Support Team to break social isolation. The program is available for members and non-members alike to improve feelings of connection.
- Stop Gap Food Program is providing emergency hampers to seniors in need residing within the following postal areas: T6A, T6C, T6E, T6P, T6G, T6H, T6R, T6J, T6N, T6K, T6L, T6T, T6W, T6X. Free delivery. Balanced nutrition of non perishable and fresh food items in partnership with the Edmonton Food Bank.
- A limited number of refurbished computers are available to local seniors through a partnership with U of A students through the Young Edmonton Grants Program of the Edmonton Community Foundation.
- A Letter Exchange Program between seniors and SCONA staff is ongoing to facilitate connection and enjoy the old fashioned delight of receiving a letter in the mailbox.

Shaama Centre for Seniors and Women
Drop-in programs have been cancelled since March 15. However, the Shaama Centre is still open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. with limited staff. Staff are keeping in touch with seniors by phone and email. The centre is also offering social meetings, activities, and classes on Zoom. Current online programs include:
- Chair Yoga: Mondays, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.
- Crafts and Quizzes: Tuesdays, 12-1:30 p.m.
- Exercise Class: Wednesdays, 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
- Cooking Class: Wednesdays, 12:30-2 p.m.
- Functional English Class: Thursdays, 12-1 p.m.
- Painting: Thursdays, 3-4:30 p.m.
- Chai and Chat: Fridays, 2-3 p.m.
In-person support for seniors is available by appointment Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Staff are also available to answer questions by email or phone. For seniors in need, the centre has started to deliver cooked ethnic meals and food hampers. Care packages are available to those experiencing depression and loneliness. The Shaama Centre is arranging for counselling to meet the mental health needs of clients. Throughout the pandemic, Shaama staff have been busy sewing washable cloth masks to meet clients’ needs. Finally, the centre is filing taxes free of charge for low-income families on an ongoing basis. For more information, call 780-465-2992 or email light@shaama.ca.

South East Edmonton Seniors Association (SEESA)
IMPORTANT UPDATE: SEESA has currently suspended in-person programming and will resume when restrictions lift.
The SEESA building is closed, however, staff will continue to provide outreach and home supports services. Outreach staff are still available for individual appointments and will be monitoring those seniors who may be isolated.
Activities
SEESA is offering online class activities in fitness, arts, music and dancing classes. The centre is planning on opening for in-centre activities in January, however, this decision will be directed by the Provincial Protocol measures. Check the SEESA website for more information on available activities.
Friendly phoners
If you're housebound and feeling lonely or know of someone who is, please call or email SEESA. SEESA is coordinating a team of volunteer Friendly Phoners who will be making phone calls to check in with folks to let them know what is happening at SEESA.

SouthWest Edmonton Seniors Association (SWESA)
IMPORTANT UPDATE: SWESA has currently suspended in-person programming and will resume when restrictions lift.
Prior to the second lockdown, SWESA had commenced offering small in-person programming out of the Blue Quill Community League. Since the start of the second lockdown in December 2020, SWESA has currently suspended programming until further notice. Reference the SWESA web page for current class offerings.

SouthWest Seniors Outreach Society
SouthWest Seniors’ Outreach Society is closed for in-person programming, however, the centre is offering an online choir through "Zoom", free of charge. In these stressful times, music can be great medicine! Strathcona Place Society
In accordance with the new restrictions announced by the Government of Alberta, Strathcona Place Society has placed the following proactive measures in place to ensure the health and safety of members and staff:
- All in-person classes have been cancelled until January 2021. Winter session programming will go forward bearing no further restrictions at that time.
- All online fitness programs for the Fall session will continue and will have an earlier start date in the Winter session.
- In adherence to the restricted business access requirement, Art (Oil and Acrylic) participants will be given an opportunity to collect their supplies by appointment.
- The Wisemen and Wonderwomen support groups will be shifted to an exclusively online format.
- All fees paid for cancelled classes will be compensated in the form of class credits, to be used in the Winter session bearing no further restrictions at that time.
- Opportunities to host outdoor Winter programs and activities will be embraced should there be favourable weather and adequate interest.
The centre’s boutique will remain open by appointment only. Social distancing, mask-wearing, pre-screening, and sanitization measures will continue to be observed. Westend Seniors Activity Centre (WSAC)
IMPORTANT UPDATE: WSAC has currently suspended in-person programming and will resume when restrictions lift.
WSAC proactively closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic on March 13, 2020. Since then, the centre has partnered with other organizations, such as Edmonton Seniors Centre, ICAN, Drive Happiness, the U of A and many more to bring a variety of programs, PPE, food, events and volunteer opportunities to seniors. For more information and to register, email programs@weseniors.ca.
- The centre currently offers a rich array of online Zoom programming in the areas of fitness, arts and health and wellness. WSAC intends to continue offering online courses within Edmonton and beyond in the months to come.
- WSAC has procured a steady supply of PPE items, including masks and sanitizer, which have been sold and delivered thousands of older adults in the Edmonton region.
- A new nutrition program provides quality packaged meals. Meals can be ordered online and picked up at the centre weekly.
- WSAC's Frozen Meal Program is currently offering Turkey Dinners--just in time for the holidays! Visit the website for more information about how to place an order, visit the WSAC website. Free delivery is available for seniors who cannot drive or visit the centre. For seniors picking up their turkey dinners, the centre will be open Dec. 21, 22, 23, 24 (half day), 30, and 31.

The Wild Rose Old Tyme Fiddlers Association will be restarting some of its activities (listed below) in a limited capacity in September. Please note, the below dates are tentative and are still being confirmed. Sites will follow COVID-19 prevention protocols that have been developed in accordance with AHS guidelines, including the wearing of facemasks.
- Circle Jam & Beginner Fiddle Lessons (Pleasantview Community Hall, 10860 - 57 Avenue, Edmonton): Mondays starting September 14; 7-9 p.m.
- Intermediate Fiddle Tunes Workshop (North Glenora Community Hall, 13535 - 109A Avenue, Edmonton): Thursdays starting September 10, 7-8 p.m.

Edmonton Senior's Coordinating Council has created a document providing a summarized list of service providers to assist and support seniors in our community during the COVID-19 outbreak. Community Response to COVID-19: Help for Seniors
There are currently a few community response efforts relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. These initiatives exist to support neighbours helping neighbours.
YEG Community Response to COVID 19 Facebook Group
This community-driven Facebook group provides a forum for volunteers to offer help and for those in need to ask for help. It is regularly updated with information by the community.
Community league volunteer response
Edmonton community leagues-such as Queen Alexandra, Westmount, and Parkallen-are recruiting community members to assist with volunteer outreach efforts. Additional information about these community-based volunteer efforts will continue to be collected in the coming weeks.
