The Society of Seniors Caring About Seniors (SSCAS) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to be an effective service facilitator for seniors to help them retain their lifestyle, sense of independence, and well-being.  The Society was created in 1988 to meet the need for service providers to assist seniors with minor home repairs.  Services are available to low-income South Edmonton residents who are 65 years of age or older.

In 1994, a transportation program was introduced.  Pre-screened volunteer drivers transport and assist members in keeping appointments in Edmonton .  Seniors must purchase tickets in advance for rides and book rides at least two days in advance.  A $6.00 ticket is good for each 1 ˝ hour round trip ride or portion thereof.  Drivers can accommodate walkers, but not wheelchairs.

Seniors meeting eligibility requirements, including income limits, must pay a $10 membership fee before accessing service. Detailed program guides are sent to all members.  In 2004, SSCAS provided 12,000 rides that accounted for 80% of all services provided.

The remaining services for seniors in 2004 included carpentry, housekeeping, yard work, shopping, light electrical and plumbing, painting, and snow removal.  SSCAS maintains a database of pre-screened service providers whose maximum rate (paid directly to the worker) is $12.00 per hour.  In 2004, the Society’s service providers completed over 2,500 jobs.

SSCAS  recently moved to St. James Catholic School.  A group of 90 volunteers/service providers assist two part-time paid staff members (Executive Director and Coordinator of Volunteers) in the delivery of the Society’s two programs.
