SAGE’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for older people through service innovation, advocacy and volunteerism in Edmonton and surrounding areas

  

SAGE is a multi-service senior centre established in 1970 which:

·        Provides information and referral services related to older people

·        Offers a wide range of essential programs, services and activities of interest to older people

·        Involves volunteers over 18 years of age in its day-to-day operations and delivery of service

Provides general and specific information, referral and advocacy relating to services in Edmonton for older people including:

 

·        Information about pensions, finances and income support, health services, income tax, funeral services, government resources, Edmonton ’s senior centres and other resources as required
·        Comprehensive information about the services and programs of SAGE – Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton, formerly Society for the Retired and Semi-Retired 
 
Guardianship Program - 780-701-9006
 
Provides information, referral and support services to guardians and potential guardians in order to facilitate guardianship and review application processes
·        Assists with Guardianship Self Help Kit, Dependent Adult applications for Guardianship or Review of Guardianship through monthly orientation groups or on a one-to-one basis
·        Information and resource material about Enduring Power of Attorney, Personal Directives, Probate and Wills
·        Lawyer referrals for Wills, Personal Directives, Enduring Power of Attorney and Dependent Adult matters 
 
SAGE Seniors’ Safe House - 780-702-1520
 
·  Provides safe housing, on a temporary basis, free of charge for men and women, 60 years of age or older, needing safety from an abusive situation
·        Other services provided while in Safe Housing include: furnished accommodation, meals and snack items, peer support, professional assistance, connections to community resources, and practical assistance

·        Assists older persons in locating reliable, responsible workers to assist with interior and exterior home maintenance at an affordable cost, e.g. yard work, home repairs, snow removal
·        All workers are screened and have provided a current Police Record Check
 
Home Relocation Service - 780-701-9007
 
·        Provides information and assistance to older persons needing to relocate who are not able to arrange a move themselves and do not have family or friends available to assist 
·        Assists with arranging the move from the decision-making stage to follow-up after relocation
 
Communication Services - 780-701-9012
 
·       Assistance with government forms: Old Age Pension, Canada Pension Retirement, Guaranteed Income Supplement and income tax forms.  Forms not completed: Alberta Seniors Benefit, Alberta Special Needs, CPP Disability and AISH.
·        Public Access Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis to registered SAGE Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton, formerly Society for the Retired and Semi-Retired members, over the age of 60 for Internet access, writing letters and learning about computers.  One computer is equipped with software and hardware to facilitate use for the visually impaired.
·        Publications:  Directory of Seniors Services  – a listing of over 300 agencies and businesses in Edmonton that may be of assistance to older adults
 
Programs and Activities  - 780-701-9016
 
Provides learning and social and recreational opportunities through courses, activities, groups, workshops and fitness programs. There are opportunities for social outings and activities throughout each month.
 ·        Fall, winter, spring and summer courses include: Tai Chi, Yoga, health lectures, painting, computers, fitness and music
 ·        Specialized fitness classes for older adults focus on strength, balance and endurance exercises. Qualified instructors provide individual and group leadership.
  
Opportunities to participate in a variety of groups for social support, to learn new skills and to contribute to the community at large include:
 ·        Raye Dolgoy Bridge Club meets to play bridge Fridays at 12:15 pm on the Mezzanine
 ·        Busy Fingers meets Thursdays at 9:00 am in the Crafts room to knit and crochet
 ·        Day Trippers plan day trips outside of Edmonton during the spring and summer months; contact SAGE – Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton, 
for schedules
·        Down Home Singers meet Thursdays at 11:00 am in the auditorium to sing and perform in the Sunshine Café at noon
·        Happy Travellers present regular slide/video shows the 3rd Thursday of each month at 1:00 pm in the auditorium 
 ·        Let’s Do Lunch Group meets the second Tuesday of the month at 12:30 pm to go out for lunch in an Edmonton restaurant
 ·        GeriActors Drama Group meets weekly to write and act real life dramas and comedies

Seniors’ Social Work Services provides social and emotional support to older adults, their families and caregivers through the provision of individual, group and family support and empowerment through information and education:
 
·         Providing comprehensive, client-centered assessment
·         Providing individuals with follow-up and reassurance in the areas of greatest need
·         Providing supportive counselling to individuals, their families and caregivers
·         Offering group education and support
·         Walk-ins welcomed
·         Home visits provided in special circumstances
·         Support Group for Adult Children Caring for Aging Parents
·         Driver Cessation Support Group
 
Volunteer Services - 780-701-9015
 
Our programs, services and activities could not operate without volunteers who spend thousands of hours annually sharing their expertise, time and energy.  SAGE  Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton, formerly Society for the Retired and Semi-Retired, is always in need of volunteers.  Volunteer recruitment and training is offered and links to other volunteer opportunities in the community are made.  Volunteers are always needed on the switchboard, reception desks and for monthly Bingo.

·        Drop-in health clinics to address health concerns and encourage healthy lifestyles are staffed by retired nurses Mondays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm
·        Foot Care Clinics (V.O.N. fee for service) Tuesdays from 12 noon to 4 pm
