History:

In 1978, the Edmonton Northgate Lions Club constructed a recreation centre on city land for senior citizens and the community. The Community Services Department maintains the Northgate Lions Seniors Recreation Centre in collaboration with the North Edmonton Seniors Association (NESA).

The NESA is an independent, non-profit society formed in 1978 to provide “recreational, social, educational and health related programs and services for seniors (age 55+ years).” The NESA offers more than 180 individual programs per season and has added an extra 10,500 square feet of space to run even more programs. “Join us for Laughter, Learning and Living!”

Summary of Program Information

The Northgate Lions Seniors Recreation Centre has programs/clubs that run weekly year round, seasonal programs, information sessions (toonie talks), classes in the fall, winter and spring, as well as special events. Currently there are more than 2,391 members who are 55 years of age and older, and the annual membership fee is $30/year (Jan.–Dec.).

We run over 180 programs per season. The areas include computers, crafts & hobbies, drawing & painting, fitness & sports, general interest, health & wellness, languages, music & dance, social experiences, and for anyone 18+ years we offer evening and weekend courses as well.

For anyone who is under 55 years of age we offer a non-member seasonal pass for $30/season.

We have many special events at the centre such as New Year's Eve dinner & dance, Valentine’s Day dance, Volunteer Appreciation Night, Spring BBQ & Silent Auction, Gold Rush Lunch, Oktoberfest, Christmas concert and weekly Wednesday night dances. To keep the costs of these events and programs reasonable we have fundraising events such as flea markets, bake sales and arts and crafts sales. There are also a wide range of volunteer opportunities available if you are interested! “Join us for Laughter, Learning and Living!”

The North Edmonton Seniors Association (NESA) is operated by a volunteer board of directors and there are over 500 very active volunteers and six staff that manage programs and assist with events and services. For more information on the Centre, the Association, and programs/events e-mail, phone or pick up a brochure!
